The Municipality of Thames Centre (Middlesex County) has destroyed and sent the headstones from Gladstone Baptist Cemetery to the local dump. Their reasoning was that it was for “health reasons” and it was the “best decision” because the cemetery walls were crumbling and it may have posed a risk to visitors.
There are plans to have a cairn placed at the site and photos of the cemetery before destruction can be viewed on the Municipality of Thames Centre website. The Ontario government has launched an investigation and the Registrar of Cemeteries is looking into whether or not the situation was handled properly. Source: A-Channel News
