Formerly Gardner’s Clearing, was a small settlement in this area where in 1821 the settlers erected a log church as a meeting place for religious worship. The church was served from the Toronto Circuit by travelling Wesleyan Methodist preachers.

The land for a new church and cemetery was donated by Joseph Gardner in 1830 and the first recorded burials took place in 1837.

The present church was built in 1843 with bricks made from local clay. Extensive remodeling and the addition of a Sunday School room took place in 1869 to provide for a growing community.

A post office was opened in 1863 and served the area until 1915 when rural mail began.

In 1890 the name was changed to Britannia. Following Church Union in 1925, this church became known and Britannia United Church.

The church basement was excavated and the first furnace installed in 1897. Electric lights replaced oil lamps in 1927and a small kitchen was added in 1957.

In 1981 this church was designated a historical building under the Ontario Historical Act.

Erected in 1983 by the congregation of Britannia United Church to commemorate the 140th anniversary of continuous church services in the building.

Historical records list the names of some of the earlier Pioneer families in the settlement:
